Body OBD2 Codes (B-Codes)

Body diagnostic trouble codes begin with the letter B and identify faults in vehicle systems such as airbags, climate control, lighting, security, seats, doors and other electronic body-control functions. Browse our database of 2 published B-codes below.

What Are Body OBD2 Codes?

Body diagnostic trouble codes are stored by electronic control modules responsible for functions located throughout the vehicle cabin and body. Depending on the vehicle, this can include restraint systems, lighting, climate control, door modules, seat electronics, immobilizer functions and other comfort or safety systems.

A B-code identifies the fault detected by a control module but does not necessarily mean that the component named in the code has failed. Wiring, connectors, power supplies, sensors and module communication should also be checked during diagnosis.

How to Read a Body B-Code

A Body trouble code begins with the letter B followed by four characters. The following characters identify the diagnostic range and individual fault. Some definitions are standardized while others depend on the vehicle manufacturer.

Common Body Systems

  • Airbag and supplemental restraint systems (SRS)
  • Climate control and HVAC electronics
  • Exterior and interior lighting
  • Door locks, windows and mirrors
  • Seat position and seat-control systems
  • Immobilizer and vehicle-security systems
  • Body control modules (BCM)
  • Occupant and position sensors

B0xxx Standardized Body Codes

Body-related diagnostic codes used for systems such as restraints, lighting, climate control and body electronics.

B1xxx Manufacturer-Specific Body Codes

Definitions in this range can depend on the vehicle manufacturer, model and installed body-control modules.

B2xxx Additional Body Codes

Additional diagnostic definitions for comfort, safety, security and body electronic systems.

B3xxx Additional Body Codes

Further body-control trouble codes whose definitions may vary according to vehicle manufacturer and platform.

Generic vs Manufacturer-Specific Body Codes

Some B-codes use standardized definitions, while many body-system faults are manufacturer-specific. When diagnosing a manufacturer-specific Body DTC, use the exact make, model, year and control module involved to confirm the definition and diagnostic procedure.

How to Diagnose a Body DTC

Start by reading all stored and pending trouble codes from the relevant body-control modules. If several codes appear together, identify whether they share a common power supply, ground, wiring harness or module.

Inspect connectors and wiring before replacing components. Depending on the fault, diagnosis may also require live data, actuator tests, calibration procedures or manufacturer-specific service information.

Body OBD2 Codes FAQ

What does B mean in an OBD2 code?

The letter B identifies a diagnostic trouble code associated with vehicle body systems and body-control electronics.

Can a Body code be related to the airbag system?

Yes. Airbag and supplemental restraint systems can store B-codes, although the exact definition depends on the vehicle and control module.

Can every OBD2 scanner read Body codes?

No. A basic engine-code reader may only access the powertrain module. Reading airbag, body-control, climate and other Body codes requires a scanner capable of communicating with those modules.
